I hope 2025 brings good things to you and yours!
I welcomed in the new year (as I’ve been doing since 2016) with an improvisation. I hope you enjoy!
And on New Year’s eve I wrote the first of a series of planned blog posts about “wearing a publisher’s hat” – various topics to do with publishing sheet music. I’m starting this series with a look at how long it takes to get a piece from concept to publication (and is it worth it?!) using my arrangement of the Andante from Bach’s Organ Sonata No. 4 as an example. You can read it here. Look for a new post next week!
Since I last wrote, I posted a video of a performance of my composition Passage (I still have more performance footage and Harpist in the Wild! from 2024 to release…)
This piece, written in 2005, was my first full length composition. As part of preparing for my fall tour I did a new edition of the sheet music, improving the layout and adding a few more fingerings. You can pick up a copy here. (And if you’ve bought this in the past, send me an email and I’ll send you the updated version!)
Thinking about performances and performing, I did a Harp Tuesday episode recently looking at what to do at the END of a piece – something that I think is very important.
I also did a Harp Tuesday episode about using a metronome to work on one’s rhythm, including using an app that will click for a certain number of beats and then be silent for a certain number of beats – can you keep a steady enough pace that when the clicks come back you’re right in sync…?? Fun :)
More videos and projects to come, I look forward to sharing as the year progresses.
Wishing you lots of energy and momentum going into 2025!
Cheers,
Josh
PS no snow here in Victoria, as is typical, but we’ve had some wonderfully wild and windy weather this winter. On Christmas day there were some great waves down by the ocean – here’s a short video
