Hello from Bavaria!

I’m in the Bodensee area of Bavaria again. At this time last year I was teaching a weekend workshop organized by Lena Rummel and performing a (live-streamed) duet concert with her. This year, along with Kristine Warmhold, we’re getting ready for the 2nd of three “Connected Continents” weekend workshops.

Friday and Saturday, October 4th and 5th in Kißlegg, Germany

Both days are packed full of workshops – I wish I could clone myself so that I could attend the workshops myself! :)

One of the workshops I’m teaching is how to play my composition Forgotten Summer. This is a piece I wrote specifically to be fairly easy to play yet also feel satisfying and complex, and to offer lots of chance to express oneself with phrasing. It also features some extended technique (xylophonic sounds) and even a chance to improvise, if you feel like it.

That’s just one of so many topics – check out the schedule below. There are still a few last minute spots available – sign up and join us!

(The final Connected Continents weekend is Oct. 26-27 in Hamburg – limited space available).

Harpist in the Wild, episode 4, plus a brief pause

Last Saturday saw the release of episode 4 of Harpist in the Wild. This episode was filmed here in the Bodensee area and is the second episode to feature a duet with Lena Rummel, this time her own composition Bodenseewellen (Waves on Lake Constance).

Lena played this (as a solo) during our duet concert last year and I found it to be such an ear-worm, the main theme just gets stuck in one’s head! So it was great to get a chance to play the duet version with her, in front of the Bodensee as the sun was setting. Watch the episode here.

(Want to play it yourself? Buy the sheet music at her website or at harpcolumn music).

Episode 5 of this season was due yesterday, but early last week I caught a cold and that’s put me behind schedule. I’ve actually been super lucky not to have been sick at all over the last four years, despite all the touring I’ve done since 2022. I’m glad this was a cold and nothing worse, but it definitely knocked me out for a couple of days and so I’ve decided to take a pause and release episode 5 next Saturday – look for it then!

More Bodenseewellen and a trio concert this Sunday!

If you’re in the Bodensee area, you’ll have a chance to hear Bodenseewellen performed live – not as a solo, not as a duet, but as a trio! Lena, Kristine, and I will be performing it as part of a trio concert this coming Sunday, 17:00 at St. Theresia, Eriskirch, Germany.

I’ll leave you with a photo from a pool in a beautiful park in Hannover – autumn is definitely here! Feeling the chill in the air these past couple weeks, along with enjoying some beauitful fall colours.

Hope your September has been a good one!

Cheers,
Josh
