Who we are
Layne Brothers Studio was formed by Josh, Noah, and Robin Layne in 1995.
Originally a label for Josh's solo harp recordings, we now have our first
recording featuring Josh and Robin Layne; The
Pacific Harp and Marimba Duo.
As musicians we have a strong commitment to making recordings that faithfully
match the actual sound of our instruments. Both the harp and the
marimba are difficult instruments to record. We use a ribbon mic
and high quality pre-amp to record directly to DAT tape. For Josh's
first two CDs we used a Speiden ribbon mic, and for our most recent recordings
we're using a Royer SF-12.
Since ribbon mics (with their lack of a built in "boost") need a very good
pre-amp we've used Millennia Media's HV III.
Our recording process allows for as much time as we need to feel comfortable
with the take we have for each track. This means we need to do very
little editing. In fact, Josh's first CD, A Harp Recital, has
no editing at all. Editing and mastering is done off-site.
Our covers feature stunning original oil paintings by Noah.
