Headed to Europe on August 12th!

Hi, it’s been ages since I last wrote! Various life things have kept me busy but expect to hear more from me in these upcoming weeks and months – lots of stuff happening!

Let’s start with Europe – I’m performing and teaching in Europe again this summer and fall, starting with a trio concert, a Connected Continents workshop weekend, and a couple of duet concerts, all in Germany near(ish) Colgne.

German harpists Lena Rummel, Kristine Warmhold, and myself will be doing three Connected Continents weekend workshops in three different locations around Germany. Each of the two-day events will feature a full lineup of workshops (with something for everyone!) plus an exhibition of harps and of course sheet music and CDs available from all three of us, more on that in a moment.

Dates and locations:

August 17 & 18 in Lohmar (near Cologne) with an exhibition of harps by Camac Harfen Deutschland.

October 4 & 5 in Kißlegg (near Switzerland and Austria) with an exhibition of harps from Jonathan Dentler.

October 26 & 27 in Hamburg with an exhibition of harps from Hendrik Schupp.

If you’re interested in the Lohmar event registration closes on August 1, so sign up now!

I posted a short video talking about these workshops and how I think the value of a weekend such as this is not only about the workshops themselves (and I’m baised but I think they’ll be great!) but also about getting a chance to spend time with a bunch other people who play and love the harp! If you’re in the area I hope to see you at one of the weekends.

Trio and Duo concerts in August

The first event I actually do when I get to Germany is a trio concert! Kristine, Lena, and I will be performing a concert of trios, duets, and solos on Friday, August 16th, in Rösrath near Cologne at 19:30. Details here.

And then Kristine and I will do a pair of duo concerts on Friday, August 23 in Cloppenburg and Sunday, August 25 in Wachtberg.

During all these concerts as well as the ensemble music I’ll be playing a few of the solos that will make up my solo concert tour program – my first solo concert is schedule for September 6th in Selm, Germany.

Solo Concert Program:

Here’s the program I’ll be touring:

Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor
The Adagio from Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez
Salzedo’s Variations on a Theme in the Ancient Style

Bach’s Partita No. 1 in B flat
My own compostion Passage
Walter-Kühne’s Fantasie on themes from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin

I just published a Harp Tuesday episode talking about the program!

New sheet music coming soon!

I had copies of Transcriptions for Lever Harp, Volume 1 and Uncharted Shores printed in Adelaide earlier this year at the start of my Australian tour. I have to say, even though these days I’ve gone completely paperless, I got a real thrill out of holding physical copies of my music – very cool!

So I’m looking forward to getting more more of my music printed for Europe – if you’re looking to get physical copies of my music, make sure you make it out to one of my concerts or workshops.

One of the books I’ll be printing is a new book of Baroque music for pedal harp! I’ll have copies at the Connected Continents workshop in Lohmar and will do a PDF release on my store at the same time – I will keep you posted!

(PS if you’re in Australia Carter Harps Australia has physical copies of Transcriptions for Lever Harp, Volume 1 and Uncharted Shores available).

Harp Tuesday

Phew, that’s a lot of topics covered! Let me finish by mentioning the Harp Tuesday episodes I’ve published since I last wrote (there’s quite a few!):

How I structure a concert program

The new 13 inch iPad Air! What it means for musicians

Using an iPad as a musician in 2024

Figuring out pedal changes and fingering: featuring Schubert/Godefroid “Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt”

How to play “Le Roi a Fait Battre Tambour”

How to play two handed trills on the harp

How to play left hand harmonics on the harp

That’s it! Hope you’re having a wonderful summer, thanks as always for reading, and I will write again soon!

Cheers,
Josh
