Hi everyone!
First up on the spotlight today is the first Harp Tuesday episode of 2013! I did something quite new for this episode – I want to play a virtual duet with you!
I recorded both halves of the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria and uploaded them, so that you can, for example, play the tune along with the video of me playing the accompaniment. Would love to hear from you if you try this – info@joshlayne.com
Here’s my webpage with all the details, sheet music, and videos.
And here’s a video of me playing both parts at the same time:)
And then I wanted to share a few videos of Jacqueline du Pré. One of my absolute favourite musicians. I love how she dives into the music – I think sometimes classical musicians get too caught up in a fear of mistakes and a desire for technical perfection – but sometimes you just have to go for it and if mistakes happen, so what?
du Pré is perhaps most famous for her Elgar concerto. I also adore her performance of the Dvorak concerto. And here’s a beautiful video of her playing the piano (ignore Daniel :) where her musicianship and phrasing just shine through.
Finally, a fascinating channel with huge number of early, early piano recordings (early 1900s, etc.) Some are piano rolls, some are super early recordings. Includes piano rolls by Debussy, Grieg, Saint-Saëns, etc. plus famous performers of the late 1800s and early 1900s. A fantastic treasure trove…
That’s all for this week – see you next week!
