Sunday Spotlight – Jan. 27, 2013

Hi everyone,

Time for another spotlight!

This week, I’m spotlighting the “Choir” series of documentaries.  Featuring choirmaster Gareth Malone, these are delightful and uplifting shows that remind us how wonderful it is to sing, and how we can all sing – it’s not just for professionals ;)

If you’re in Canada you can watch a couple of the series online at TV Ontario’s site: Unsung Town and Gareth Malone goes to Glyndebourne.  I highly recommend Unsung Town.  Glyndebourne was maybe a little weaker but still definitely worth watching.

You may also be able to find some of the videos on YouTube.

I’m re-reading “The Art of Learning” by Josh Waitzen, and that’s the second thing I want to spotlight today.

Josh was a chess prodigy (the book and film Searching for Bobby Fischer was about Josh), and then later became a world champion martial artist.  He feels that it’s not that he was super skilled in chess or martial arts, but rather that he is extremely good at learning things.  While the book is not directly about music, I’ve found it a fascinating and inspiring read in terms of thinking about learning, and acquiring and trying to master skills.

Highly recommended!

That’s all for this week, see you next week :)

Josh  (PS I had a super busy week this last week and didn’t manage to do a Harp Tuesday episode, but I know what I want to do and I should have something for this Tuesday!)
