Happy September, everyone!

Welcome to the first edition of a new format for my email newsletter.  I’m now using MailChimp‘s great (and free!) set of tools, and I plan to write on a much more regular basis.

Lots of news to share with you, so lets get started!

Spring 2013 CD release tour

Hard to believe, but my last CD (Masterworks for Harp) was released over 10 years ago!  I’m very excited about this new CD, which will feature my transcription of Bach’s Partita No. 1, Renié’s fantastic piece Légende, Fauré’s Impromptu, my own Passage and Rhapsody, and more!

The CD will be released spring of 2013, and I will be touring to celebrate the release.  I’m planning to visit much of Western Canada and the US, plus possibly a few East coast concerts and Europe.  I’ll be keeping you up-to-date about concert dates in future newsletters.

I could also use your help!  If you or someone that you know is interested in organizing a concert where you live, whether it’s a house concert or something on a larger scale, I’d love to hear from you.  Get in touch with me at info@joshlayne.com

Music Videos!

In the last several months I’ve made a couple music videos of my own compositions – Passage,

and Fantasy on Greensleeves.

Had a lot of fun putting them together.

Arranging Greensleeves project

Speaking of my Fantasy on Greensleeves, it’s a work that came about through my Harp Tuesday video series.  Someone suggested doing a look at arranging a piece, and so over 5 episodes you get to watch ‘Fantasy on Greensleeves’ come together.  I’m very happy with how the piece turned out!  You can buy the sheet music as a PDF download for $3 – includes the full 9 page version, an easier version and one for lever harp PLUS the mp3 single.  The mp3 is also available by itself for $1.

New webdesign and blog!

I recently overhauled my website.  It’s still a work in progress, but you can check out the new look at www.joshlayne.com  I’ve also started a blog – recently I’ve been writing about my journey learning the violin – check it out at www.joshlayne.com/blog

Harp Tuesday

I continue to have lots of fun with Harp Tuesday – some recent topics include thoughts on using a metronome, changing levers on the folk harp, and producing a good tone.  You can go here for a list of all Harp Tuesday episodes, or go to my youtube channel at: www.youtube.com/user/JoshLayne77

Composing

I have a number of projects in various stages of completion.  In particular, I’m hoping to record soon a piece I wrote last year for harp and double-bass, called ‘Cotton Butterfly‘.

I got inspired a few weeks ago and have just finished a short chamber piece for trumpet, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, and double-bass.  Shared a short snippet of it earlier on my blog here.  Now, in a newsletter exclusive, listen to the whole piece here.  (Will post the link on my blog in a few days).

Skype lessons

I’ve been teaching via Skype.  It’s actually quite effective; you soon forget you’re not in the same room.  I posted a video with some tips on setting up for Skype lessons here.  Interested in a lesson or coaching session?  Send me an email!

Local News

I’ll be performing a concert in Victoria in late October (edit – concert will be on Thursday, Nov. 1 – more soon!).  Will feature various things I’ve been working on – time and date have yet to be finalized – I’ll let you know! (Or keep an eye on my blog).  Also, excited to be performing Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro with Norman Nelson and the Sooke Chamber players in March, 2013

That’s all for now.  Thanks for reading!

Cheers,
Josh
